1864
Maryland’s third state constitution took effect on November 1, abolishing slavery throughout the state. More than 160 years later, its freedom story is still being written by its communities.
Freedom is a date.
Legacy is what we do with it.
On November 1, 1864, Maryland abolished slavery. The story did not end there.
Across the state, Black Marylanders built communities, institutions and traditions that continue to shape who we are. Our Kinship Communities Emancipation Day Dinner brings their descendants, stewards and champions together to honor that history and consider its future.
Produced by the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation and hosted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture, this intimate evening is designed for connection, remembrance and shared purpose.
