Every family treasure has a story.
On September 18 and 19, 2026, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, Glenstone Museum, and the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation brought Hometown Treasures: Capital Region to the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center in Potomac, Maryland.
Over two days, visitors met one-on-one with preservation professionals to learn how to care for cherished photographs, letters, books, clothing, and other family items. They also explored the Community Expo, joined seminars, and connected over the stories that make up our shared history.
Hometown Treasures was a reminder that history lives in our homes, our memories, and the stories we pass down. Explore the photos below for a glimpse of the weekend, and stay connected with the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation for future programs.
